Parenting

Equip your children to navigate today's digital world with wisdom, confidence, and safety.

About this lesson

Technology isn't going away, but families can learn to use it wisely. Teaching digital responsibility prepares children to thrive both online and offline.

What you'll take away

  • How to prepare children for today's online world.
  • Ways to promote digital responsibility and safety.
  • Practical conversations every parent should have about technology.
  • How to help kids use technology with wisdom and balance.

Before you start

Welcome! Technology is one of the greatest opportunities—and challenges—facing families today. As you watch, think about one conversation your family needs to have about digital life. We'll help you start that conversation afterward.

The lesson

Technology is shaping the world our children are growing up in, and our goal isn't to prepare them to avoid it—it's to prepare them to thrive within it. Phones, social media, artificial intelligence, gaming, and digital communication will all be part of their future. Rather than simply limiting access, we have the opportunity to teach our children how to use technology wisely, responsibly, and with purpose. Thriving in a digital world begins with understanding that every click, post, message, and conversation is an opportunity to reflect our values and character. Help your children understand that technology is a powerful tool that can be used to learn, create, build relationships, solve problems, and make a positive impact, but it also requires discernment and self-control. Encourage open conversations about what they see online, how social media makes them feel, who they interact with, and the choices they make when no one else is watching. Create an environment where your children know they can come to you with questions or mistakes without fear of immediate judgment. Trust grows through conversation, not just rules. Teach them to think critically before they post, share, or respond by asking simple questions: "Is it true?", "Is it kind?", "Is it helpful?", and "Would I be comfortable if everyone I respect saw this?" These habits help children develop wisdom that lasts far longer than any parental restriction. Just as importantly, encourage your children to create more than they consume. Technology offers incredible opportunities to learn new skills, start businesses, create art, solve problems, and serve others. Help them see that they can use digital tools to make a meaningful contribution instead of simply being entertained. This week, spend time exploring technology together. Ask your child to show you their favorite app, game, or creator, and use the conversation as an opportunity to understand their world while sharing your family's values. Then identify one positive way your family can use technology together to learn, create, encourage someone, or serve your community. The digital world isn't going away, but with intentional guidance, open communication, and strong values, your children can learn to navigate it with wisdom, confidence, and integrity. Our goal isn't simply to raise kids who are safe online—it's to raise young people who use technology to build a better world while protecting what matters most: their character, their relationships, and their purpose.

Talk about it as a family
