The lesson

Every child needs more than a parent who provides for them—they need a parent who intentionally mentors them. While it's important to manage schedules, help with homework, enforce rules, and meet daily responsibilities, our greatest calling is to prepare our children for the people they are becoming. Great parents don't simply raise children; they develop future adults. Mentoring means seeing every conversation, challenge, success, and setback as an opportunity to teach character, wisdom, faith, resilience, and purpose. Instead of asking, "How do I get my child to behave today?" begin asking, "What kind of man or woman am I helping them become?" That simple shift changes everything. Children learn far more from who we are than from what we say. They watch how we handle disappointment, how we treat others, how we solve problems, how we apologize when we're wrong, and how we celebrate the successes of those around us. Your example becomes their blueprint. That's why one of the most powerful things you can do is spend intentional one-on-one time with each child. Ask thoughtful questions, listen without rushing to fix every problem, encourage their unique gifts, and help them discover the purpose God has placed inside them. Mentoring isn't about having all the answers—it's about walking alongside your children as they learn to make wise decisions for themselves. Instead of immediately solving every problem, ask questions that help them think: "What do you think is the right thing to do?" "What have you learned from this?" "How can I support you?" These conversations build confidence, wisdom, and independence while strengthening your relationship. Remember that mentoring happens in everyday moments—during meals, in the car, while working on projects together, serving others, or simply talking before bedtime. Those ordinary moments often become the most extraordinary opportunities to shape a child's heart. This week, choose one child and spend at least 20 uninterrupted minutes together doing something they enjoy. Ask about their dreams, what they're excited about, what's challenging them, and how you can encourage them. Resist the urge to lecture or solve problems—simply listen, encourage, and affirm who they are becoming. When children know they are seen, heard, valued, and guided with love, they gain the confidence to navigate life with wisdom and purpose. Your greatest legacy won't be what you own or accomplish—it will be the lives you intentionally invest in. Every conversation is an opportunity to mentor, every day is an opportunity to lead, and every child is a future leader waiting for someone to believe in them.
